Your first trek should leave you wanting more, not limping to the bus. These trails are short to moderate, have clear paths and come with big rewards: a heart-shaped lake, a tea factory above the clouds, or a waterfall roaring through the forest.

1. Chembra Peak, Wayanad

Difficulty: easy to moderate. At about 2,100 m, Chembra is the highest point in Wayanad. Beginners love the walk to its famous heart-shaped lake. Trekking needs Forest Department permission, and parts of the upper trail have been restricted at times because of wildlife, so confirm the current status with the local forest office before you go.

2. Kolukkumalai, Munnar

Difficulty: easy. A 4x4 jeep takes you most of the way up through tea estates; a short walk leads to the sunrise viewpoint. Perfect for families.

3. Illikkal Kallu, Kottayam

Difficulty: easy. A short, steep walk to a dramatic rock with valley views on all sides. Very windy at the top, so stay behind the railings.

4. Ranipuram, Kasaragod

Difficulty: easy to moderate. A forest path that opens onto rolling grassland. Around 2–3 hours return and one of the prettiest beginner walks in north Kerala.

5. Athirappilly Waterfall Trail, Thrissur

Difficulty: easy. A forest walk down to the base of Kerala's largest waterfall. Best just after the monsoon when the falls are full. Stay behind the barriers; the rocks are slippery.

6. Meesapulimala, Munnar

Difficulty: moderate. The step up after your first easy trek: longer, higher and unforgettable. Read our full Meesapulimala guide.

7. Kurisumala, Vagamon

Difficulty: easy to moderate. A pilgrim hill with a paved path, grassland and 360° views. A gentle sunrise walk on a Vagamon camping weekend.

First-trek tips

  • Wear shoes you have already walked in. New shoes cause most blisters.
  • Start early. Kerala gets hot and hazy by late morning.
  • Drink small sips often, and eat something every hour.
  • Go with a group or guide, and tell someone your plan.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the easiest trek in Kerala?

Short forest walks like the Athirappilly waterfall trail and the Ranipuram grassland walk are among the easiest. Kolukkumalai is easy if you take the jeep most of the way up.

Do I need a guide for beginner treks in Kerala?

Most trails in forest areas require a Forest Department guide or permit. Even where it is not required, a guide or group makes the day safer and easier for first-timers.

How fit do I need to be for a beginner trek?

If you can walk briskly for an hour without stopping, you are ready for an easy trek. For moderate treks, walk or climb stairs 3–4 times a week for a month beforehand.
