Sleeping under the stars in the Western Ghats is magical, but a cold, wet or noisy first night can put people off camping for years. These are the tips our camp leaders share with every new camper.

Before you go

1. Book a legal, licensed camp. Camping in Kerala's forests is only permitted through the Forest Department, KFDC or licensed operators. It is also much safer.

2. Check the night temperature. Munnar and Vagamon can drop to 8–12°C between December and February. Pack for that, not for Kochi weather.

3. Ask what is included. Tent, sleeping bag, mat, dinner, breakfast, toilets and bonfire are usual, but confirm.

Pack smart

4. Bring layers, not one heavy jacket. A thermal, a fleece and a rain shell keep you comfortable from sunset to sunrise.

5. A headlamp is essential. Phone torches drain your battery and leave you with one hand free.

6. Use a dry bag. Even a short shower can soak a backpack. Our packing list has everything else.

At the camp

7. Keep food sealed and inside. Monkeys, wild boar and insects love open snacks.

8. Wear socks and a cap to sleep. You lose a lot of heat through your head and feet.

9. Go easy on water after dinner if you don't want a midnight walk to the toilet.

10. Respect quiet hours. No loud music. The night sounds of the forest are half the experience.

Leave no trace

11. Carry back every wrapper. Plastic is banned in many forest areas, and wildlife eats what we leave behind.

12. Wake up for sunrise. Seriously. It is the best hour of the whole trip.

Frequently asked questions

Is camping in Kerala safe for solo women?

Yes, when you choose a licensed camp and a trusted group. Many trekkers come solo; ask us about women-only and family batches.

Are there toilets at Kerala campsites?

Licensed campsites provide toilets, usually shared and basic. Forest base camps may have very simple facilities, so carry tissues and a small sanitiser.

What if it rains at camp?

Good camps use waterproof tents on raised or well-drained ground. Keep your clothes in a dry bag and carry a rain jacket. In heavy weather, camps move guests to covered shelters.
